Mercy Heart Hospital, WHO-TV 13, Iowa AED Access For All and Iowa Heart Center will donate automatic external defibrillators (AED) to local area businesses and organizations who can demonstrate their need for the devices and agree to complete training in how to use them.
We have a team of American Heart Association certified CPR and AED Instructors who can offer Heartsaver CPR and AED training to you or your organization. For information on scheduling training click here.
State Fair a Success
We had the use of a booth at the Iowa State Fair for 3 days. We met lots of great people, and demonstrated the use of AEDs.
Thanks to Medtronic for donating the use of the booth.
Wayne County Sheriff's Office Gets AEDs
The Wayne County EMS Council was successful in getting a grant from the Iowa Dept of Public Heath EMS Bureau that paid for 50% of the cost for AEDs to be placed in all Wayne County Sheriff's Office patrol cars and in the Sheriff's Office/Jail.
We trained all members of the Sheriff's Office and the AEDs have been placed in the cars and the office. In addition, Wayne County Emergency Management Director Bill Yeager has received funds to make AEDs available for the Corydon and Seymour Police. They also took part in the training and soon will be equipped with AEDs.
As you may know, a law enforcement officer on routine patrol is often closer to an ambulance call than the ambulance.
Added to the total already in the county, this gives us about 20 AEDs in our little county.

SCA Spotlighted on 13 WHO TV
Channel 13 WHO TV, Mercy Heart Hospital, and our Organization have joined together in a year long campaign to raise awareness of SCA and the need for AEDs.
As part of that campaign Channel 13 had been running spots on SCA survivors. Several members if our organization have been featured in these spots.
Iowa AED Access for All in conjunction with the Sudden Cardiac Arrest
Society and Defibetch donated an AED to the Urbandale Middle School in
honor of Ethan Middleton. Ethan, while in 7th grade, suffered a sudden
cardiac arrest on Dec. 5, 2006 while playing basketball at Urbandale
Middle School. The swift actions of his coach in providing CPR and of
the EMS who arrived with a defibrillator saved Ethan's life. Ethan now
has an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator which has saved his life
three times since.
Iowa Smoking Ban has been enacted
The new Iowa smoking ban took effect July 1, 2008
AED Access For All encourages everyone to celebrate this by patronizing their favorite restaurant and thanking the management for complying with the new law.
Putting AEDs in Our Schools AED Acccess For All has set our goal for 2008 to ensure AEDs are placed in all of Iowa's schools. We are working with the
American Heart Association and other groups
to get legislation passed to require all schools to have AEDs. Regardless of the
legislation, we will also be working
directly with schools to help them raise the
funds to purchase AEDs and train their staffs. We are
collecting data on which schools need AEDs, which schools already have AEDs, and ensuring that the AEDs are placed
in an accessible place for anyone to use.
