2008 AED Access For All Directors Award Recipients
Butch and Susie Gibbs received the 2008 AED Access For All Directors Award on 10/28/08. They were given the award for their efforts
in getting AEDs placed in all Wayne county schools, getting AEDs for the Wayne county sheriffs office, providing CPR training, and the efforts in helping to pass legislation
to increase the placement of AEDs in public places.
AED Installed at Urbandale Middle School
Back in July Iowa AED Access For All and the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association donated an AED from Defibtech
to Urbandale Middle School. The donation was made in Ethan Middleton's name. Ethan has arrested 3 times while attending Urbandale Middle School,
and was one of the driving forces behind getting the AED donation.
State Fair a Success
We had the use of a booth at the Iowa State Fair for 3 days. We met lots of great people, and demonstrated the use of AEDs.
Thanks to Medtronic for donating the use of the booth.
Wayne County Sheriff's Office Gets AEDs
The Wayne County EMS Council was successful in getting a grant from the Iowa Dept of Public Heath EMS Bureau that paid for 50% of the cost for AEDs to be placed in all Wayne County Sheriff's Office patrol cars and in the Sheriff's Office/Jail.
We trained all members of the Sheriff's Office and the AEDs have been placed in the cars and the office. In addition, Wayne County Emergency Management Director Bill Yeager has received funds to make AEDs available for the Corydon and Seymour Police. They also took part in the training and soon will be equipped with AEDs.
As you may know, a law enforcement officer on routine patrol is often closer to an ambulance call than the ambulance.
Added to the total already in the county, this gives us about 20 AEDs in our little county.

AED Donated to Urbandale Middle School
Iowa AED Access for All in conjunction with the Sudden Cardiac Arrest
Society and Defibetch donated an AED to the Urbandale Middle School in
honor of Ethan Middleton. Ethan, while in 7th grade, suffered a sudden
cardiac arrest on Dec. 5, 2006 while playing basketball at Urbandale
Middle School. The swift actions of his coach in providing CPR and of
the EMS who arrived with a defibrillator saved Ethan's life. Ethan now
has an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator which has saved his life
three times since.
Congratulations!
Recently 2 of our directors were honored with awards.
Susie Gibbs, our newest director, was recognized as the third place winner of the People Saving People award by the Sudden
Cardiac Arrest Foundation.
Mary Tappe, our Chairman, was selected as 1 of 100 semi-finalists for the Energizer 2008 Keep Going Hall of Fame.
Putting AEDs in Our Schools AED Acccess For All has set our goal for 2008 to ensure AEDs are placed in all of Iowa's schools. We are working with the
American Heart Association and other groups
to get legislation passed to require all schools to have AEDs. Regardless of the
legislation, we will also be working
directly with schools to help them raise the
funds to purchase AEDs and train their staffs. We are
collecting data on which schools need AEDs, which schools already have AEDs, and ensuring that the AEDs are placed
in an accessible place for anyone to use.
